Harrison Butker delivered a commencement speech recently, as I’m sure you’ve all heard, and I finally listened to it. Did you? I had heard him called a misogynist, a racist, a white supremacist, and more. People have been dragging this man’s name through the mud, and until today, I’d only heard the same little snippet from his speech.
Firstly, let’s keep in mind that this is a catholic man, speaking at a catholic school. That means there will be catholic beliefs spoken about, I know, it’s shocking. This seems to be overlooked. Secondly, he never once said that women belong barefoot, in the kitchen, pregnant, or women should be seen and not heard. He suggested that women marrying and starting a family would be more fulfilling than any career. His evidence? His own wife, who had plans, and instead is a wife and a mother, who stays home and raises her family. What an incredible sacrifice, one Harrison seems to not only acknowledge, but respect. Thirdly, he never said anything remotely close to qualifying as racist or white supremacist. I’m still wondering what was taken out of context for that garbage to be thrown around. What did he say that was so awful? Nothing.
Now, I’m not catholic, but I thought he did a great job. He spoke about heavy subjects that our kids need to prepare for. There were touchy subjects, like abortion, surrogacy, IVF, and gender ideology. But, he was not hateful. He is a catholic man, speaking to catholic college graduates. The audience received him well. We need to stop with this ridiculous cancel culture. Different people will always have differing views. We don’t have to agree with everything, nor should we. He isn’t a racist, a rapist, a murderer, he isn’t known for beating his wife or children. So, what is so upsetting? That he wants people to have values?
