For weeks, I’ve had one Biblical woman on my mind to write about, one that there isn’t much written about. She’s in a tiny snippet, and I feel unqualified to write about her. However, as I’ve continued to look into, and try to write about other women, God continued to keep her front and center in my mind. So, this is my interpretation of one of my favorite parts of the Bible.
John 4:1, Jesus talks to a Samaritan woman. Back then Jews did not associate with Samaritans. They would become ceremonially unclean if they took anything handed to them from a Samaritan. Yet, Jesus, on His way through Samaria, stops by a well, and asks a Samaritan woman if she would give Him a drink. I firmly believe that this was purposeful, Jesus chose that well, and He chose that woman. A woman who was not only a Samaritan, but had been married 5 times, and currently was with a man who was not her husband. Imagine the shock people must have felt, her included! Jesus knew her story, yet He talked to her like He did everyone else. With respect, with love, with truth. But, why? Why talk to someone like her?
What kinds of people make the biggest impact on you, with their testimony? The near perfect? The holy? Or, perhaps, the lowly, the sinners. This woman, whose name we don’t know, made an impact on her people, many people believed because of her testimony. Many more wanted to meet and talk to Jesus, and believed. She played an important role, she brought people to Christ, and she herself became a believer. And what an impact it must have made on how Jews viewed the Samaritans.
This story, this woman, is incredibly impactful, and worth reading. Like I’ve said, He chooses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. How amazing is He, and how amazing are you.
